US Election 2024 Live: Kamala Harris’ ancestral village in India receives donations
The village’s sudden fame brought funds to the village.
Recently, construction of a water storage tank began with funds donated by a local bank.
Villagers say it will feature a plaque with Harris’ name on it.
Harris’s late mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was born in India.
After moving to the United States to study, she married a Jamaican, and they named their daughter Kamala, which means “lotus” in Sanskrit.
Aside from her childhood travels, Harris hasn’t visited India often—especially since becoming vice president—but she often speaks passionately about her relationship with her late mother’s native land. On Tuesday, she released a promotional video focusing on her mother, who came to the United States when she was 19 and became a cancer researcher.
The film is titled “Mother,” and the film ends with the narrator saying, “Shyamalan’s daughter, the daughter of American history, is ready to take us forward.”
Harris has often talked about how she was guided by the values of her Indian-born grandfather and mother.
She also spoke about her love for South Indian food, especially idli.
Harris’ name was engraved on the donor list—her aunt Sarala Gopalana and her grandfather gave the temple together. Outside, a big banner hopes that the “Daughter of the Earth” will be successful.
The village temple also welcomed a rare group of international guests on Tuesday: two Americans and a British tourist, both dressed in black “Kamala Freak Harris” T-shirts.
Villagers also prayed for Harris to win in 2020 and held fireworks when she was inaugurated as vice president of the United States.
For the women of the village, the journey of the candidate is a source of inspiration.
Politician Arumoj Sudhakar said Harris represented an important step for women’s empowerment in areas like Thulasendrapuram, where most women still face discrimination and gender inequality.
“From the time when women were not allowed to step out of their homes, now women in our village are participating in the US presidential election—it brings us happiness,” Sudhakar said.
“Future generations will look to him as a role model for success in life.”
